Hawaii Island Championships

The 2009 Hawaii Island championship race was held at Pohoiki in Lower Puna, the course race ran from the recently expanded Isaac Hale Beach park to Kehena Beach.  With fresh trade winds and favorable currents, conditions were described as "epic" and the best ever at for a race a this venue. Times were fast and the paddlers had a blast. The Paddlers could clearly see the steam from the lava entering the ocean from Kilauea as they approached the finish.
